Quick answer: To start carnivore, eat meat, eggs and animal fats (dairy if it agrees with you), salt your food generously, and eat until you’re full. Keep meals simple and repeat favorites. Most rough patches in the first weeks come from not enough fat, not enough salt, or not enough water.

Carnivore sounds extreme when you first hear about it. No vegetables? No fruit? Really?

I get it. I did keto for years before I tried carnivore. What surprised me most was how simple it is. As a busy mom, simple is what finally made it stick. Here’s exactly how I’d start if I were doing it again tomorrow.

What is the carnivore diet?

Carnivore means eating animal foods only: meat, eggs, animal fats and, if you tolerate it, some dairy. Plant foods like vegetables, fruit, grains, beans and nuts are left out.

It’s not about restriction. It’s about removal. You take out the foods that drive cravings and food noise for a lot of people, and you give your body a chance to settle down.

Carnivore vs keto: what’s the difference?

Not sure which is right for you? There’s no prize for suffering. The best choice is the one you can stick with.

What to eat on carnivore

  • Beef: ground beef, steaks, roasts, burger patties
  • Pork: pork chops, bacon, sausage (check the label for sugar)
  • Chicken: thighs and wings (the fattier cuts keep you fuller)
  • Eggs: as many as you like
  • Seafood: if you like it (more on that below)
  • Fats: butter, tallow, bacon grease
  • Dairy, if it agrees with you: cheese, heavy cream, sour cream
  • Salt: lots of it

Skip: bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, sugar, fruit, vegetables, beans, seed oils, and processed foods with fillers or added sugar.

Don’t force foods you don’t like

When I started, I thought I had to eat fish because everyone online said so. I tried. I gagged. I gave up. I tried again later. Still hated it.

There are no bonus points for eating foods you dislike. You don’t need fish, liver, organ meats or bone broth to do this. Beef, chicken, pork, eggs and the meats your family already eats are plenty.

The 3 things that make or break your first weeks

  1. Eat enough fat. Carnivore isn’t a high-protein diet; fat is your fuel. If you feel weak, shaky, hungry all the time or cranky, add butter, tallow, bacon fat or fattier cuts. When I started prioritizing fat, my cravings quieted and my energy steadied.
  2. Salt your food. When you cut carbs, your body lets go of water and sodium. Headaches, tiredness and dizziness are usually a salt and water issue, not a sign you’re failing. Drink water, add salt, and give it 30 minutes.
  3. Keep it simple. Eat the same few meals on repeat. The people who stick with carnivore are usually the “boring” ones. Repetition lowers decision fatigue and makes consistency easy.

A simple beginner day

  • Breakfast: 3 eggs scrambled in butter + bacon
  • Lunch: 2 burger patties (air fryer) with cheese
  • Dinner: chicken thighs or pork chops cooked in butter
  • Snack if you’re hungry: leftover meat, a cheese and pepperoni plate, or hard-boiled eggs

Keep a “lazy list” for busy days

The days you want to quit usually aren’t about commitment. They’re about being tired. Lazy carnivore is still carnivore. My go-to list:

  • Frozen burger patties in the air fryer
  • Rotisserie chicken
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Deli roll-ups
  • Leftover steak, sliced cold
  • Canned tuna with mayo

What’s normal in the first few weeks

  • Ups and downs. Good days followed by harder ones are common while your body adjusts.
  • Changing hunger. Some days you’ll be starving, some days not. Eat when you’re hungry.
  • Food aversion. Sometimes food just doesn’t sound good for a while. Keep it simple: eggs with butter or a burger patty is enough for today.
  • The scale moving last. Many people notice less bloating, quieter cravings and better sleep before the scale moves. For me, the scale didn’t really budge until about two months in.

Things that don’t help: constantly switching plans, under-eating, and assuming you’re failing. Most people who succeed simply stay consistent long enough for their body to settle.

Frequently asked questions

Can I eat cheese and dairy on carnivore?

Many people do, if dairy agrees with them. Butter, cheese, heavy cream and sour cream are common. If you notice bloating or a stall, try cutting back on dairy for a couple of weeks and see how you feel.

Do I have to eat organ meats or fish?

No. I don’t eat fish because I don’t like it. Beef, pork, chicken and eggs are plenty for most people starting out. Don’t force foods you dislike.

How much should I eat on carnivore?

Eat until you’re satisfied, and make sure you’re getting enough fat. Most people don’t count calories or macros on carnivore.

Why do I have a headache on carnivore?

Often it’s low salt or water. Try a glass of water with salt, or salt your food more, and wait about 30 minutes. If it keeps happening, talk with your doctor.

How long until I see results on carnivore?

It varies. Many people notice less bloating, quieter cravings or better sleep first. For me, the scale didn’t really move until about two months in.

Your next step

I’m a mom sharing what worked for me, not a doctor. Carnivore isn’t right for everyone. Please talk with your doctor before changing how you eat, especially if you take medication or have a health condition such as diabetes, kidney disease or high blood pressure.
